The Human Geography Unit of the Department of Geography, University of Zurich offers one PhD scholarship. The successful applicant will be part of an international research team working on the project “Migration, Knowledge and Development: Role of Knowledge and Skills in the Migration Process”, which is funded through the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research North-South (NCCR N-S), with financial support from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

The project takes a critical perspective on the recently surfaced new “optimistic” discourse on migration, highlighting migrants’ potential as agents of global development. The successful candidate is expected to carry out fieldwork either in rural and/or urban areas of Kyrgyzstan or in Kyrgyzstan and Nepal in a comparative way

Eligibility
Applicants should have a Master degree in Human Geography, Migration or Development Studies or any relevant Social Sciences discipline. Basic knowledge of Russian is an asset but no pre-condition, but must be acquired at a later stage.

- A draft PhD research sketch in English (about 4 pages) within the broader theme of the project on “Migration, Knowledge and Development”, incl. core research question and its justification; links to ongoing theoretical debates; possible empirical field research; relevant literature.

PhD Scholarships from Faculty of Arts at University of Wollongong

Two scholarships are available for PhD research to commence in Semester 1, 2010. The scholarships are associated with Professor Vera Mackie’s ARC Future Fellowship Project on Human Rights in the Asia-Pacific Region. Applicants should have a first-class honours degree with a specialisation in Asia-Pacific studies. Language skills from the region to be studied would be an advantage. Possible topics include a study of human rights in a specific country in the region, or a thematic study such as sexuality and human rights or indigeneity and human rights.

Bursaries to Assist with Child-Care Costs to UK and EU Students who are Returning to Higher Education at the University of Edinburgh

The University is offering six bursaries intended to assist with child-care costs to UK and EU students who are returning to Higher Education study at the University of Edinburgh after a break of at least 3 years. The bursaries will have a maximum value of £3,000 per annum. Bursaries will be awarded for one year in the first instance, however successful applicants pursuing a postgraduate degree programme of more than one year in length will be eligible to apply for a further bursary in subsequent years.

Who may Apply:

1. The bursaries will be awarded to mature UK/EU citizens who are returning to higher education after at least three years away from university. Applicants should already have been offered a full-time postgraduate place at the University of Edinburgh (in any study discipline) and should have firmly accepted that offer.
2. The bursary will be available to help towards the cost of registered or formal childcare, particularly assisting single parents. Formal childcare includes childminders, after school clubs and providers of day-care and education.

Master Scholarship at The University of Twente Filed under student4

Fund: €5,000 – €20,000

The UT Scholarship is awarded by the Foundation University of Twente Scholarship Programme of the University of Twente. The UT Scholarship is meant for international students who show excellence, both academically as well as socially. The UT Scholarship is awarded for one year of study and is extended for a second year if study results are sufficient.

Eligibility
The applicants have to be:
- (provisionally) accepted by the educational programme at the University of Twente
- nominated for the UT Scholarshipthe by the faculty
- citizens of a non EU/EEA country

Scholarship
Scholarships awarded range from €5,000 to €20,000; only a limited number of scholarships are available.

Application procedure
The applicants need to fill the online application and submit required documents.
The general requirements for admission to the UT master’s programmes are:
1. a relevant bachelor’s degree (or equivalent qualification) from a university or other accredited academic institution.
2. proof of the English language (academic IELTS, overall band score of at least 6.5 or TOEFL, internet based (TOEFL-iBT) of at least 90)

PhD Scholarships in Informatics at Vienna University of Technology

The Vienna University of Technology offers a three year programme for national and international students interested in taking part in one of the five main research areas of the Faculty of Informatics:
- Business Informatics
- Computational Intelligence
- Computer Engineering
- Distributed and Parallel Systems
- Media Informatics and Visual Computing

Eligibility
In addition to academic qualifications and practical experience, students will be expected to show evidence of their interest in the course and research programme. Students must provide evidence of adequate English language qualifications (TOEFL, IELTS, CAE).

Scholarship
Each year up to 15 students (national/international) will be awarded a scholarship amounting to EUR 1.000 per month, to cover the cost of living.
